Of course, me being a native Washingtonian, I have always known how to seek out great free events. It's a pay off of course because the cost of living in DC is so unbelievably high. I proceed to go to the Free Sackler Gallery where they were showing this little gem of a film that goes by the Western title "All About Women". It must have been a popular film because all the seats were taken and I had to stand through the entire film. The theater is not particularly large. When I actually saw the film, I could see why. It was one of the funniest most enjoyable films I had seen in a long time. The Movie takes place in China in what I assume is Hong Kong. There are three women. The first woman uptight but lonely doctor who devises to get love by artificially producing pheromones. Up until this point she has been a awkward clumsy severely myopic nerd with no luck with men and is willing to do anything to better her chances. The second women is a glamorous professional woman who has no trouble attracting a man. So much so that few women are willing to be her friend for fear of losing the men in their lives to such a beautiful woman(her sole female friend won't invite her to her wedding for fear that her fiance will leave her for the other woman. Predictably, he does). The third female protagonist is a little more complex. She's 19 a guitarist and vocalist in a band and lives in the musicians ghetto (RENT style). She's also an Internet novelist and has taken up boxing in order to vent all of her punkish anger. She is ALSO so in love with a film star named X to the point of being delusional (she actually believes he is her boyfriend and talks to him as if he were real). She hopes to someday realize her rock star potential and make it big.
These three women come together through a hilarious convoluted sequence of actions. The ending however is more of the curse "May you get everything you want" sort of deal. All three characters are given what their hearts most desire with the option of accepting it or rejecting it. There are compromises to made in terms of love. Compromises of pride or integrity. Some characters find this predicament easier to deal with than others. Is it worth it to use pheromones to simulate love? Is it better to be alone and loved by many or to return love to one person at the expense of pride? Is dating a movie star and living the Rock star life worth it if there really was no chemistry to begin with?
